The day after playing for the Much Music Awards where Phil Kates won a director award for "Running Wild in the 21st Century", (from the Back for Another Taste album) we were scheduled to be filmed and recorded with other Canadian artists singing a new version of "O Canada".
It seems that during the Gulf War someone discovered that there was only one recorded version of our national anthem, so they decided to do a new version which was later distribued to libraries, schools, and radio and TV stations across the country.
One of my vocal students, Adam Woodgaines, had been kind of enough to play keyboards for us at the awards show, and he asked me if we would mind if he came down to the studio when we recorded the national anthem the next day to meet some of the stars who were to be there, like Kim Mitchell and Mitsou. There was to be a little "meet and greet" before the actual recording so we said, "sure." Anyway, that's what we did. Adam came down with us and was blown away talking to everyone.
When it came time to record, he asked me where he should go, and I said, "Just walk into the studio with everyone else and see if anybody
says anything." Well, nobody did, and the next thing I knew, Adam was standing shoulder to shoulder with me in the back row. Up front Dan Hill was complaining about a sore throat, and asked to be moved away from the microphone, so guess who he ended up trading places with? You guessed it, Adam! I thought for sure at this point that someone would ask who the hell this guy was, but nobody ever did.
We all received citations from the Governor General Raymond Hnatyshn. To this day you may still see Adam and ourselves on this video, as some TV stations use it to close out their day. |
