1984 - First Gold Album

This was to be the year that would see the band rise to new heights with our second Capitol release "Walking the Razor's Edge" and the hit song, "Rock You". It was at the Nassau Coliseum in New York , where we were playing with Rush, that we heard the album had gone gold in Canada . Two weeks later it went platinum and everything started to go crazy.

We ended up on the Whitesnake / Quiet Riot Tour which took us to major arenas all across the United States . Once again we were also playing our own headline dates in between.

Once again we headed for Europe, this time touring with Motorhead, Girlschool, and Mercyful Fate. We received heavy rotation on Much Music in Canada on all three videos from the album (Rock You, Gimme' Good Lovin' and Make Me Do), and were frequently doing interviews for them as well as hosting select video shows.

ARTICLE: Stranger Steals the Show during Performance by Helix

During their show in Louisville, Kentucky , rock group Helix was pounding out its opening set for Heart when somebody in the audience decided to get in on the act.

Lead guitarist Brent Doerner was performing a solo when a stranger jumped on stage, grabbed Nancy Wilson's acoustic guitar and began playing - note for note - along with Doerner.

Totally absorbed in his music, Doerner didn't even notice the interloper, who turned out to be guitar great Eddie Van Halen of the heavy metal group Van Halen.

After the show Eddie and Alex came up to the dressing room to have a few drinks and shoot the breeze with us. Eddie showed Brent Doerner how he could play his guitar by putting it flat on his lap and "hammering" the strings, a technique he had perfected and was going to use on the next Van Halen tour.

The picture was for David Muntz from Capital Records who was instrumental in signing Helix to the label. We wore the leader hose because we were based in Kitchener , Canada which has the second biggest Octoberfest in the world after Munich , Germany.
