Been meaning to do this all summer...!
I want to thank the guys from FAST TRAIN UNION for sending me not one, but TWO copies of their latest release: ANALOG OUTLIERS. I always have an affinity towards any musician or musicians that have the balls to take destiny into their hands by following through on releasing original material.
The band formed in Ottawa in 2006, and are composed of Sean Potvin/vocals, John Wetherilt/guitar/vocals/etc., Al"Fitz" Fitzgerald/ guitar/back-up vocals, Paul De Marinis/drums, and Michael Ashton Wetherilt/bass. I was impressed with the band when they opened for HELIX the last time we played the BRASS MONKEY, which seems like it was 4 years ago now. But I remember talking to the band and listening out front. Nice guys with good attitudes. That's everything baby! To purchase a copy of FAST TRAIN UNION contact John Wetherilt @jtwether@bell.net
Secondly, I also want to mention a band that Lynda and I had stay here for a couple of days-THE FIXER-from Thunder Bay. A great bunch of rock n' roll gypsies discovering the Great White North one date at a time. Many of you don't realize how much guts it takes to take your show on the road; playing to empty houses, living off the generosity of others to just eat and shelter yourself properly. Tough. I know. I did it for a over 30 years...but the life calls you, not the other way around. I could no more stop doing this lifestyle than I could stop breathing tomorrow.
Anyhoo, THE FIXER camped out on our basement floor on air mattresses and roughed it without a word of complaint. Very polite and fun to be around. I felt kinda paternal, if you want to know the truth...Great bunch of kids and I'd have 'em here anytime!

Today was my last day of teaching for the year. All the summer dates are done. Just a little bit of recording/writing and then it's off to North Fort Myers, Florida for the winter. I've already sent an email to Stett Howland that I'll be there in four weeks. Also to my buddies Johnny Hyatt and Cam Dick (Everybody loves Dick!) to get their fishing rods ready. My buddy Derek Rauchfliesz has also just bought a 30 foot boat which he is fixing up, so it looks like a fishing -kind-of-year. Hee-haw. As well, I'm looking forward to seeing my friend William Malstrom and all our friends at Bayshore Village.
I've been neglecting my posts of late. Been wanting to put up quite a few things, so maybe I'll get a chance over the next couple of weeks as I prepare to leave for the Sunshine State. I've had quite a few friends pass away over the past year. This week alone I lost another two: Tom Kouzounas and Lenny Stoute.
Tom was a roadie for us during the Back for Another Taste era. He looked like Slash of GnR, wilth his long curly hair covering half his face.
He'd use this line with chicks he'd meet on the road: "Hi, I'm Tom. I play guitar. I'm working for a band playing here in town." LOL.
On his very first day with us he ran into a toll booth with the equipment truck. He hit it so hard he cracked the cement and was sent a bill for $15,000.00. Don't know if he ever paid it. Incidentally, the impact of the truck knocked the sign overhead off and it landed on the hood of our truck. It read; NO TRUCKS ALLOWED.
We had a lot of laughs with Tom while he worked for us. Such a sweet guy who always wore a smile. I phoned up Denny Blake and Daryl as soon as I heard. They were shook up; I could tell. Another one of the good ones gone to the big "C".
Miss ya Tom. Feel bad that I didn't see you before you passed.

I love young bands that have that thirst and fire in their belly-ya know-the ones that are out there "doing it" and not waiting to win the lottery. One such band is The Fixer, from Thunder Bay, Ontario. The lead singer (who's name I can't remember) is the daughter of Chuck Sanford, a good friend of mine.
While they're playing their Ontario dates Lynda and I will be putting them up at the house. Check out their new song & video:

Summer is drawing to a close for HELIX this weekend, with our last two shows of the summer being two acoustic shows. Tonight, Sept 13th@The Blyth Theatre in Blyth () and tomorrow (Sept. 14th) @ Capitol 33 in Delhi, Ontario. Both are great venues to perform these two shows, which are different than any other we've performed this year. Joining us onstage for the song "YOU'RE A WOMAN NOW" will be Michell Truman, the lovely lady who has fronted the band TORONTO for the past several years. The song she's soloing in was our very first "hit" in 1979, becoming an airplay staple in Texas due solely to Joe Anthony, who worked out of KISS/KAMAC in San Antonio. Joe was known as "The Godfather of Rock and Roll."
On percussion for these two shows is Mike Hackman, Paul's brother. Dan Diggins, who plays with Daryl in his weekend band SCURVY DOGS, and who filled in for Chich the day of the 1ST ANNUAL HELIX BACKYARD BARBECUE, becomes the third guitar player on stage, also adding his angelic voice in several songs.
Lastly, we have Jay Panaseiko running the videos which punctuate the two sets. Most of it was filmed while Fritz was still alive, so he's actually up there on the screen talking. Once we've got the show a bit more developed, we'll probably have some sort of tribute to the people who have been in the band and passed away: Don Simmons, Ron Watson, Paul Hackman, Fritz Hinz, and Dan Fawcett. I also liked an idea I saw at the Full Moon Fever show (a tribute to Tom Petty) where they had trivia projected on the screen between sets. Thought that was very creative. There's other ideas as well: I went and saw champion fiddle player Scott Woods and the show he's honed for many years now. I wasn't ever really a fiddle fan until I saw Scott's show. One of the ideas he used was positioning cameras strategically around the stage so that when different players are soloing the cameras switch to whomever. I also got some great ideas going to see Mike Lambert of The Barn Katz, who's a friend of mine. His show moves along like a well paced theatrical show, which is kinda what I'm shooting for with the An Intimate Night with HELIX: Acoustic songs and story telling.
I'm sure there will be some hiccups tonight (especially integrating the songs & film so they run together smoothly in the set) but the fun thing is that the music sounds great, and everyone is pumped to have a good time. There's always an edginess when you're putting something new together. Everyone is "on their toes" so to speak, and there's always that adrenaline pumpin', 'cos after all, nobody wants to make an ass of themselves in front of an audience. LOL.
Hope my two fur babies know why we're abandoning them for the day. I think they will, especially since we got Faith to come in and feed 'em around six...
